Our fifth graders are engaged in a Problem-Based Learning unit with the Akron Zoo. This real-world problem-solving opportunity was presented to our learners by zoo employees via Skype! So often, animals need something to do that replicates their natural behavior and environment. Our fifth graders have been asked to research five animals that live at the zoo and design prototypes of enrichment toys that are appropriate for each animal. Their research will involve technology and a visit to the zoo for behind the scenes access. Zookeepers will also be available to answer their questions. At the end of the unit, zoo personnel will choose which ideas will be created and presented to the animals at a second visit for the learners! Now that's real world experience!
