Research at the Akron Zoo

With Problem-Based learning, our learners have opportunities to collaborate with community organizations to learn more about their community and be involved with real-world problem solving. Our 5th grade learners are currently working with the Akron Zoo to support animal enrichment. Our learners have spent two weeks collaboratively studying and developing questions related to research for one of five animal groups needing assistance at the zoo. Andean condors, naked mole rats, waterfowl, electric eels, and Speke’s gazelle came alive as research continued at the Akron Zoo with the zoo animal experts. Our learners observed their animals in the zoo habitat and gained additional knowledge of their adaptations and simulated natural behaviors. Taking additional notes and in-depth questioning by our learners gave them background to begin an animal enrichment experience when they return to school for the next step. Stay tuned for the outcome of this creative design experience.
