Akron Zoo Partnership

NIHF-STEM Partners With the Akron Zoo
Posted on 05/11/2021

For the past three months, a group of persistent 7th graders have been working on a problem posed to them by the Akron Zoo.  The Legends of the Wild exhibit is the oldest section at the zoo.  Carrie Bassett and Autumn Russell, staff members of the education department at the zoo contacted this group in February via video asking for their help in designing new signage for this exhibit.  The zoo has recently changed its mission to include information about climate change in all they do.  They wanted the new signs to reflect this mission.  The learners researched the animals and the effects of climate change on them, as well as learned new techniques in design.  They received guidance from Coach Emily Butler, the NIHF STEM art coach, Coach Susan Hall, the NIHF STEM media specialist as well as Ms. Sarah Steidl of The University of Akron marketing department. These events were coordinated by our program specialist, Brenda Leighton. On May 3rd they presented their work to all of these stakeholders via Google Meet.  Their work was well received! This collaboration was made possible through a grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation.
