Posted on 10/12/2020
Internationally traveled Jazz musician, Kevin Johnson, awed learners at STEM with original compositions highlighted by an on the spot pick your own jam event! Students completed a survey during the event to select a B flat, harmonic minor, upbeat rock request to conclude the show. Johnson used the requests to compose a final piece for our virtual school audience. The learners experienced different vibes in composition with various chord progressions. Explaining that jazz improvisation is a different language based on music theory, our live event included piano, electric guitar, trumpet, and a didgeridoo from his study in Australia. Identified  as a Cirque du Soleil performer by one of our learners, Mr. Johnson shared how he uses improvisation in his performance to highlight the actions of performers on stage. When he was asked how learners should respond to the thought that they can’t do something, he emphatically responded, “You can!”
