The program is called the Exploring Club and it is part of the middle school transformation funded by CCAA-(College and Career Academies of Akron). Based on a survey given to our 6th - 8th graders we were matched with 3 career areas: skilled trades, healthcare, and the performing arts. The twelve-week program is divided into 3 modules that are four weeks each. The first three meetings of each module are spent learning about the career and doing hands-on related activities and the fourth meeting is a field trip to the company/organization. Our program includes Goodyear Autotech, Rubber City Theatre, and Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital.
So far we have had 2 meetings with Goodyear in which the learners interacted with a Tesla Model S and learned about electric cars and a Camaro racing car. They learned how to check air pressure, tire tread depth, and how to check oil. Stay tuned for more special features as this program continues!
