On March 31st and April 1, 2022, our fifth-grade learners had an enchanted experience attending a Baroque Opera presented by Les Delices. La Chatte Blanche (The White Cat) based on a fairy tale originally written by Marie-Catherine D’Aulnoy, the inventor of the term “fairy tale,” was a re-write of the classic Puss in Boots story. The vibrantly magical digital scenery by projection designer Camilla Tassi, depicted the time period. Live music played with instrument period style, was based on music the author of the story may have been familiar with. The libretto was modernized by Larry Rosenwald. Puppetry created by Ian Petroni delighted the entire audience. Following the performance, our learners had the opportunity to ask questions to one of the main characters, the producer, and the puppeteer. A reflection review of this experience was shared by the learners when they returned. Here is what they had to say:
“I would recommend this oper to others because of the magical story elements.”
“The emotions were twisting, flying, and dramatic!”
“The puppetry and scenery were detailed and imaginative.”
“The creativity of the puppetry, scenery, costumes, and opera brought the story to life.”
“The original music and story mixed with today’s language made it a modern tale we could all enjoy.”
