Research at the Akron Zoo

NIHF-STEM Fifth Graders Research Animal Enrichment at the Akron Zoo
Posted on 02/11/2022
After doing animal research in the classroom, fifth-graders went to the Akron Zoo to get information from animal experts as they prepare to design enrichment activities for specific animals at the zoo. This year, learners will be designing enrichment activities for the river otters, bald eagles, Andean condors, Galapagos tortoises, and African Straw-colored bats. Students will use their research information as they work in teams using the engineering design process to create an enrichment activity for their assigned animal. Design prototypes will be presented to the zoo in a competition. Winners will work with the zoo to build and observe animal interactions with their enrichment activity. Please stay tuned for updates of this project!
