Our 5th and 6th Grade learners were approached by the Akron Zoo to help solve two problems. This is an example of Problem Based Learning (PBL). PBL is a student-centered approach in which students learn about a subject by working in groups to solve an open-ended problem. It starts with a Problem Statement and ends with a Presentation of Learning in which each groups presents the solutions they came up with to each other and other stakeholders (in this case, the Akron Zoo).
Our 5th Grade Problem Statement was:
How can we as Stemtasktic Learners at NIHF-STEM Middle School design enrichment for a variety of animals at the Akron Zoo and raise awareness of the enrichment program in such a way that we consider:
- Appropriateness for various animals
- Safety
- Materials Needed
- Habitat
- Budget
- Natural Behaviors
- Deadline
Our 6th Grade Problem Statement was:
How can we as Trailblazers help the songbirds survive with their full capacity of life in such a way that we consider:
- The needs of the Akron Zoo
- The welfare of the animals
- Awareness to the community
- Running into man-made objects
- Cat predators
Our Learners created innovative solutions such as infused birdseed, 3D models, and Social Media Awareness Campaigns with a Fun Song, Programed Games, and reconstructed recess games. Overall our 6th graders used the Design Thinking Process and did an amazing job.
