Food Insecurity Presentation

Each year the Ohio STEM Learning Network issues a design challenge to all of the STEM schools in the state.  This year the challenge focused on the idea of food insecurity in communities throughout Ohio. Coach Walker accepted this challenge for two of her 6th grade health classes as they study nutrition and its importance in living a healthy life.  On February 24th she presented her learners with the problem: How can we work as a team to imagine, design and prototype a solution to increase food security in our community?

Following our Problem-Based Learning process the learners started by determining what they knew about the problem and what they needed to know. Research followed and then solution-generating. Twelve groups decided what the best, most creative solution was and each presented their learning on March 21st to several community partners.  Guest judges from Goodyear, the Akron small business community, The University of Akron, and The Well listened to the presentations and evaluated them using a rubric developed by Coach Walker. Very soon one group will be chosen to represent NIHF STEM at a state-wide showcase in Columbus, hosted by Battelle and OSLN!
