STEM Learners Assist Red Cross Disaster Relief

STEM Learners Assist Red Cross Disaster Relief
Posted on 02/07/2020
Learners at STEM are keen observers! Recent news of natural disasters in our world from the fires in Australia to the earthquakes in Turkey, have given our students pause for reflection. Our sixth grade students are showing concern for the emotional needs of students their own age in these areas where natural disasters have occured. Working with Debbie Chitester, Disaster Program Manager for Summit, Portage and Medina Counties, our learners designed solutions to the problem of assisting the emotional needs of natural disaster survivors.  After studying a variety of natural and human induced disasters including fires, floods, blizzards, earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, chemical and oil spills, our learners studied how these catastrophic events affect people who have lived through these life changing events. In response, they created solutions to help students cope with the emotional trauma following a natural or human disaster. Their solutions were shared in the American Red Cross Northeastern Ohio Region News on January 24th.
