Our fifth grade class shared in the excitement of problem solving in our own community when they received a request from the Akron Zoo via Skype to help the zoo with animal enrichment designs in five different habitats. Learners were asked to research the naked mole rat, electric eel, Speke’s gazelle, waterfowl and the Andean condor to discover their natural habitat and behavior in order to design an enrichment prototype for the animals. Enrichment provides animal activity opportunities that stimulate natural behaviors and is critical to the animal’s well being in the zoo environment. Learners will continue their research with animal experts at the Akron Zoo during a field trip next month. Stay tuned for more exciting information on this inventive animal adventure!
